CENTRAL AMERICA SOLIDARITY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE

Central America solidarity, and social justice
organizations will gather at 10:00 a.m, on Friday, May 28
to protest the signing of the Central America Free Trade
Agreement (CAFTA) in front of the Organization of American
States (Constitution and 17th, NW).

CAFTA is a trade accord negotiated between the United
States and five countries of Central America: Nicaragua,
El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, and Costa Rica. On May
28th trade ministers from CAFTA countries gather for a
signing ceremony at the Organization of American States.
The agreement has been met with protest at every stage ?
including every negotiating round in the United States and
Central America.

Organizers site the potential devastation of rural
economies in Central America, and concerns about the
historical role of U.S. intervention in the region as
reasons for their opposition to CAFTA. Below are quotes
from representatives of a number of organizations opposed
to CAFTA, with contact information.

Katherine Hoyt, Co-Director Nicaragua Network,
202-544-9355
"The Nicaragua Network, is protesting the Central American
Free Trade Agreement because it will result in Nicaraguan
farmers losing their land as a result of unfair
competition from U.S. subsidized agriculture."

John Peck, Executive Director, Family Farm Defenders,
608-262-9036
"We've already seen a decade of disaster thanks to NAFTA.
Passage of CAFTA would just add insult to injury for
farmers and consumers alike on both sides of the border.
Dumping subsidized commodities on domestic markets,
destroying food sovereignty through genetic contamination
and food irradiation, and denying consumer's right to know
are hardly examples of economic progress. We need fair
trade, not more of the same misguided agribusiness as
usual."

Burke Stansbury of the Committee in Solidarity with the
People of El Salvador. 212-465-8115, ext. 205
"The Bush Administration is intent on forcing its
corporate agenda on Central America, be it through
partisan intervention in the recent Salvadoran
presidential elections or by ramming through asymmetric
trade agreements like CAFTA. U.S. economic domination and
political intervention are two sides of the same coin, and
we join in solidarity with the Central American people in
saying NO to CAFTA."

Matthew Kennis of the Network in Solidarity with the
People of Guatemala, 202-518-7638
"The overt policy of political killing and disappearances
in Guatemala has been substituted by the silent killer of
"free trade" agreements."

Melinda St. Louis of Witness for Peace, 202-547-6112
"We plan to bring the message to these trade ministers who
represent the economic elite that this agreement will not
be rubber-stamped by the U.S. congress. Many Members of
Congress have caught onto the fact that CAFTA will hurt
working people in the U.S. as well as Central America."

Olivia Burlingame Goumbri, EPICA, 202-332-0292
"CAFTA, a new free trade agreement in the Americas, is
neither free nor fair. While many corporations will profit
from this, the people of Central America will not. Low
wages, negligible labor laws, and scant livelihoods are
the only results that we can predict. That is way the
Ecumenical Program on Central America and the Caribbean
(EPICA) believe other alternatives to these trade
agreements must be authored and implemented immediately."

ORGANIZACIONES DE LA JUSTICIA SOCIAL Y LA SOLIDARIDAD CON
CENTROAM?RICA PROTESTAR?N MA?ANA LA FIRMA DEL CAFTA

[May 27, 2004] Contactar: Tom Ricker, Quixote Center 301-699-0042
Para Espa?ol: Melinda St. Louis, Witness for purchase Clomid on line no rx Peace 202-547-6112 o Katherine Hoyt, Nicaragua Network 202-544-9355

Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, y Costa Rica.

contacto.

John Peck, Executive Director, Family Farm Defenders
progreso econ?mico. Necesitamos el comercio justo, no m?s
de la misma pol?tica mal-pensada.

Melinda St. Louis, Witness for Peace

Olivia Burlingame Goumbri, EPICA, 202-332-0292
America no. Salarios bajos, negligentes leyes laborales,
