SOA Watch Founder Roy Bourgeois and SOA Watch Latin
America Liason Lisa Sullivan on a delegation to the
U.S./Mexico border at Nogales, Arizona and Nogales,
Sonora. Since the 1994 passage of the free-trade
agreement, NAFTA, the U.S. has increased their
southern Border Patrol by 500%. The US spends over
$90 billion a year to "secure" the southern border
and arm a para-military force that spends 80% of its
time confronting maids and gardeners. Over the past
decade the "Drug War" has left 100,000 dead and a
had a zero impact on the availability of illegal
drugs in the US. Human rights organizations have
documented the use of torture and enforced
disappearances and executions by Mexican military
and police, many trained in the US. The delegation
will visit Tucson and both of the towns of Nogales
on either side of the border. Delegates will have
the opportunity to experience programs that directly
serve migrants at the border, and meet with
organizations that directly aid migrants in the
desert. We will also meet with human rights
organizations, immigrant advocates, and faith-based
groups.Together we will explore ways in which we can
help change this untenable and deadly US immigration
policy.
The
delegation fee of $1,300 includes all meals, lodging,
transportation, and materials within
the country. It does not include travel to and from
Tucson.
