Election Results 2008: A New Action Campaign

The elections results are in!!!

Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) has been confirmed the new President of the United States in a landslide election that demonstrates the power of grassroots activism. His campaign has given hopes to many that true change is possible, and SOA Watch will work tirelessly to make sure this campaign of change includes a new direction for U.S. foreign policy in Latin America and an investigation and closure of the SOA/ WHINSEC.

This week, the campaign to close the SOA/ WHINSEC took several steps towards victory! Not all of the final results for House of Representative elections results are confirmed, but already at least 35 of the Hall of Shame representatives (who voted against a cut in funding for the SOA/ WHINSEC in June 2007) are no longer in Congress! (11/6/2008) In most cases, more favorable representatives, and in some cases allies of our movement, have been elected in their place. In June 2007, the McGovern-Lewis (GA) amendment to cut funding for the school lost by a margin of only 6 votes, and with 35 “no” votes taken out of the equation, SOA Watch looks forward to an exciting and victorious 111th Congress!

The election may be over, but grassroots legislative action is not! We need your help a new legislative campaign we are launching before 2008 comes to a close.

PETITION TO OBAMA:
AN EXECUTIVE ORDER TO CLOSE THE SOA/ WHINSEC

As President of the United States, Barack Obama is able to close the SOA/ WHINSEC with an executive order. SOA Watch has created an online and paper copy petition that will be presented after his inauguration in January 2009. We need as many signatures as possible to demonstrate the overwhelming sentiment that the SOA/ WHINSEC should be closed!
