Sociologist and young activist Gabriela Uassouf was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Daughter of the neoliberal crisis generated by the dictatorship led by SOA graduates that disappeared 30,000 people (1976-1983), she supported the decision of President Kirchner's government in 2006, to stop sending Argentine troops to the SOA/WHINSEC. Gabriela now works at the SOA Watch Latin American office in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, where she also participates at a communal TV station.

Nico Udu-gama, SOA Watch U.S. Field Organizer, has witnessed the atrocities caused by Latin American soldiers on behalf of US imperialism while living and working in Colombia.  His experiences in Latin America, the US and the Middle East are with him in the fight to close the SOA/WHINSEC and end militarization.

Featuring new SOA Watch audiovisual material, Gabriela and Nico will summarize how the SOA has "jumped its own fences" as new forms of U.S. military intervention in Latin America grow, and how the continental movement against militarization and for a culture of peace is acting against it. Each and every one of us has something to contribute to the movement.

The School of the Americas (SOA) was founded in 1946 in order to train Latin American soldiers in a number of abusive and agressive techniques that would help control the resources and peoples South of the Río Bravo, in favor of U.S.'s interests. Among SOA students were military linked to the Argentine (1976-1983) and Chilean (1973-1990) dictatorships, to massacres such as El Mozote (El Salvador, 1981), and to attempted coups d'états in Venezuela (failed in 2002) and Honduras (2009) which has suffered a dictatorial government for the past 18 months. Today, SOA functions in Fort Benning, GA, under the name of Western Hemisphere Institute for Security and Cooperation (WHINSEC), and constitues only a small part of the ample strategy of economic and military domination of Latin America by the U.S. That strategy also encompasses military cooperation agreements with countries like Colombia, financing conservative NGOs through agencies such as USAID, occupying militarily countries such as Haiti, and reactivating the impressive Fourth Fleet. However, as the U.S. militarization deployment in Latin America becomes more complex, the movement against it and for a culture of peace also multiplies its fronts.

TRAE A SOA Watch A TU COMUNIDAD
¡Tráelos a tu comunidad!
