January 12, 2008: Abriendo las Memorias - Healing the Wounds PDF Print E-mail
The January 12 vigil in Los Angeles was a replica of the Fort Benning protest and was held at Los Angeles State Historic Park. It featured speakers Father Rdoy Bourgeois, Martin Sheen, Cindy Sheehan, Blase Bonpane, Eisha Mason, Fernando Suarez del Solar, Don White, Lucia Munoz, Dr. Jose Quiroga, Patricia Contreras, Josh Harris, Jim Lafferty, Hector Aristizabal, Maria Guardado, Mario Avila & Frankie Flores and music by Cuauhtemoc Azteca Dancers, El Salvador's Hip Hop Marmota Fu, Ross Altman, Maria Armoudian, Will B. & Dennis Davis.

Several human rights advocates and social justice organizers spoke of their experiences as activists fighting to close the school down, others spoke of their experiences as torture victims and survivors who lost family members to SOA-sponsored violence in Latin America. Lucia Muñoz spoke about the effects of SOA-trained soldiers on women in Latin America, most notably the “femicide” in Guatemala. The speakers urged the crowd to teach about the SOA/WHINSEC in classrooms, to attend the annual protests in Georgia and to keep up the pressure on our representatives in Congress. After the stage program came to and end, protestors took part in a solemn procession bearing crosses with the names of victims of SOA violence while musicians on the stage sang the names the crosses bore, the crowd answered with the chant: “presente”.

Once the procession came to an end, the participants placed their crosses on the parks lawn and participated in a “die-in” following a puppetista performance depicting “birds of destruction” turning a village into flames. Puppetistas performed a “return to life celebration” using giant paper mache faces and hands to wake the “dead bodies” up as an allegory for the uprising that must take place atop the ashes of those brutalized by the violence and racism of a militaristic US foreign policy.
