1. REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION ~ NEW YORK CITY ~ AUG 29 - SEPT 4, 2004

** You will receive SOA Watch?s ?RNC Call to Action? in a separate email. Please forward it widely to your friends and family! **

The Republicans are descending on New York City this August and September in a shameless effort to exploit the tragedy of 9-11. Be among the hundreds of thousands converging to stand together in the streets of New York City to demand an end to empire and to call forth the possibilities we envision for the future!

Training for Trainers and SOA Action: Join SOA Watch in New York before and during the RNC to learn organizing skills and how to offer nonviolence trainings to prepare your group for direct action at the SOA. We will organize a visible CLOSE THE SOA presence during the Republican convention. To get involved in this exciting opportunity, contact Eric LeCompte at

2. PRISONER OF CONSCIENCE UPDATE

Last week you received an emergency email from SOA Watch about prisoner of conscience Scott Diehl, who has been denied medication by the warden at FCI Waseca where he is currently serving a three month sentence for his act of nonviolent civil disobedience at Fort Benning last November.

Scott still needs your help! We have been unable to verify whether Scott has begun to receive his medicine. Please continue to call and fax the prison on his behalf.

3. IMPORTANT LEGISLATIVE REMINDER

Don't Forget - There are less than 5 weeks left before a possible vote in the House to close the SOA/WHINSEC. Use all of your tools and lobby, lobby, lobby! Clike here to visit the Legislative Action Center for more info and resources.

4. CONVERGE ON FORT BENNING THIS NOVEMBER 19-21 ~ CLOSE THE SOA!

This November 19-21, we will again stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters throughout Latin America and say no to torture, rape and murder in our names. We will speak out for justice and a world free of military
repression. We will put our bodies on the line and engage in nonviolent direct action.

The movement to close the School of the Americas has succeeded in educating broad cross sections of society about the reality of U.S. foreign policy in Latin America. Thousands have been arrested after crossing the line onto the Fort Benning military base. Over 170 people have collectively served more than 78 years in federal prisons and jails for nonviolent protest calling for the closure of the School of the Americas/WHINSEC.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Now is the time to mobilize and to spread the word about the SOA/WHINSEC. Organize nonviolence trainings and/or teach-ins in preparation for the
November vigil action. Click here for tips on how to organize a teach-in.

SOA Watch is co-sponsoring a speaking tour with the Mexico Solidarity Network across much of the US. Energize your community by hosting a dynamic
speaker. For more information about the tour,

Look into organizing buses or vans to travel to Columbus. Reserve hotel rooms in Georgia for your friends and yourself.

SEE YOU AT THE GATES OF FORT BENNING!
