Dear Friend of SOA Watch,

Father Roy Bourgeois and I have just returned from a visit to Honduras with SOA Watch activists from Maine, California, Ohio, Vermont, Connecticut and Michigan. We had hoped to find a country in the process of healing, two years after SOA graduates led a military coup.

We discovered, however, that the bloodshed continues. We met with families of teachers, journalists, peasants, labor leaders and human rights activists who lost their lives for daring to raise their voices for justice.

I am reaching out to you because I believe that with your generous help, SOA Watch has the opportunity to contribute to efforts to prevent some of this bloodshed in Honduras.

In recent years, Father Roy and I have visited 17 countries of the Americas where we have heard similar stories of loss linked to SOA graduates. The difference in Honduras is that these stories are being told in the present tense.

In the valley of the Aguan River our delegation met with five widows whose husbands were murdered in the struggle for land rights. In the week since our return, this tally of widows has grown by three.

Yesterday a peasant organization issued a plea: please send us urgently human rights observers. This loss is too great. This request echoes that made to SOA Watch by COFADEH, the Committee of Disappeared and Detained of Honduras, who are asking SOA Watch to send short term human rights observers to areas where community leaders are being threatened.

We ask that you help us to raise $5,000 in a very short time in order to respond quickly to this request for accompaniment of those whose lives are being threatened in Honduras.

I have unshakable faith in the commitment and generosity of the SOA Watch movement. Every year when we gather at the gates of Fort Benning to sing out the names of those whose lives have been lost by graduates trained behind those gates, I feel your incredible solidarity for the people of the Americas. Please help us now to make sure that no more names from Honduras will be added to that litany next November.
