DC March in Solidarity with Brazilian Social Movements PDF Print E-mail
The new Brazilian president, Dilma RousseffDilma Rousseff, will visit DC next Monday, April 9. A number of organizations here have planned a march in solidarity with social movements in Brazil. Ms. Rousseff has backtracked on a number of issues, especially in the environmental area by weakening forest protections and approving massive dam projects that will displace thousands of indigenous families and destroy large swaths of the Amazon, among other things. The march will include the call on Brazil to follow the examples set by Argentina, Bolivia, Uruguay and Venezuela; and to withdraw its troops from the School of the Americas / Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation. Brazilian social movements are happy we are planning this march and it should get decent coverage in Brazilian media. I hope you can make it!
