Can You Join Us in April? Print

April 7-10: See the online schedule of events!
April in DC: Take it to the Streets and to the Halls of Power!

In less than three weeks, SOA Watch activists will be coming to DC for our April 7-10 Lobby Days [please continue to check back for our updated schedule of events]. As we spread the word in our communities about the SOA/WHINSEC, we must take that clamor for justice and dignity and spark creativity and hope in DC! Will you join us?

Please let us know if you are coming - or thinking about coming - to DC for any part of the lobby days from April 7-10, 2013. Click here to R.S.V.P.

Like Guatemalan social movements who for years have been pushing for justice, and are now seeing SOA dictator Efraín Ríos Montt on trial for genocide, we must keep our eyes on the prize and continue pushing forward. Justice will be ours.

Direct Action
Using all of the tools available to us, from lobbying to direct action, the movement--you, me, all of us--will be gathering in the Capital to show solidarity with one another's struggles, and to show the depth of our commitment to those in DC who are making decisions over life and death.

Following lobby training on April the 8th [location TBD] from 1-3pm, there will be a discussion of direct action--what it means, what it looks like, and what it can accomplish. On site will be all of the materials needed for several actions of varying involvement. This will be an opportunity to form or join with already-formed SOA Watch affinity groups--small units of individuals who will have the hands-on experience of participating in a direct action. Information about the legal repercussions of certain activities will also be provided. Contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Legislative Action
From March 25 through April 5, members of Congress will be in their home districts for their “District Work Weeks.” Please call your representative today [click here to find your rep] to set up a meeting with them in their home office, as well as in DC! Let us know when your meeting will be. We need to get as many Representatives committed NOW to support the forthcoming McGovern bill.

At 10am on Monday, April 8th, we will hold our lobby training. The SOA Watch Legislative Working group will provide you with all of the tools, the knowledge and the tricks-of-the-trade for ensuring that you and you can effectively lobby decision-makers in Congress. Stories of Honduras

Every day in Honduras brings more threats to those who speak out for justice, more murders, militarization, and repression. In spite of this, people continue to stand up for their rights and we invite you to read about our experiences in Honduras, from visiting campesinos (peasant farmers) who are recuperating their land, to accompanying women who marched to the Presidential Palace and Congress on International Women's Day. Just before that, we walked alongside hundreds of Hondurans in the 10-day Walk for Dignity and Sovereignty Step by Step to demand that the government stop selling off the country to multinational corporations for mining and 'model cities.' Read more about the walk here and watch a short video about the walk that includes interviews with walkers who will be affected by mining and model cities. The walk also called for freedom for campesino leader Chavelo Morales, who has been unjustly imprisoned for over 4 years. When the walk reached the capital, we were able to meet with the Supreme Court about Chavelo's case. They agreed to schedule a preliminary hearing for the first week of April, which is a big advance after years of stalling by the lower courts. Thanks to everyone who signed the petition for Chavelo's freedom and e-mailed and called the Supreme Court! If you haven't done so yet, please do so here!
