Police Chief Boren, In the end SOA Watch will win the litigation. We have precedence and constitutional rights on our side. You might as well skip all the hassle, unless you don't care about wasting the tax payer's money in your frivolous attempt to silence us of the good people of Columbus. Besides, law enforcement is supposed to be politically neutral and protect the rights of all citizens, not just the ones you agree with. I expected better from you.

You, sir, are clearly violating the right of all Americans to protest against our government's misdirected policy in Latin America. If you try to deny the 1st Amendment rights of the citizens wanting to protest, it will backfire on you. Even more protesters will show up and the controversy will attract greater media coverage. This is what it means to live in a police state. The cops believe that their badges confer the right to assault, murder, and revoke civil liberties with impunity; to assume the powers of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches; to play judge, jury, and executioner at the scene; and to be the interpreters and arbiters of citizens' constitutional rights. Dear Chief Boren, For 25 years, as you know, we have come to the gates at Fort Benning in an orderly and peaceful manner. I believe you know that Fort Benning brings shame to your community as well as employment and monetary benefit. Let us work together to build a good and honorable peace for the world. Let us work together for a time when people don't have to be ashamed of the means they use to accomplish worthy goals. Let us teach our young people to have courage and uphold justice. Let the vigil continue as a proper means of vocalization against injustices, as a memorial for those killed and currently victimized by tactics taught & subsidized by forces larger and wealthier than the typically civilian populations whose means are not those of whom hire paramilitary armed guards etc . The symbolic vigil is a means by which to humanize an otherwise vulgar situation(s) deemed necessary for security cooperation. I would hope to appeal to your own humanity above some transparent bureaucratic SOP that has outlived its own rigidity already. Civilians die, are maimed, disappeared and families displaced by the complaicant aftermath and administrative towing of a line that is sheepishly held together by underlings hoping to advance by way of fraternal legislative earmarks highlighted in red tape. I wish to lend my support to this movement today and continually as a compass for accountability in this plight for more peace and justice. I hereby defere to Father Roy Bourgeois and SOA Watch leadership as to their wishes and judgment for appropriate vigil requests, needs and negotiated event guidelines. You probably would have no problem if white people wanted to erect a stage on which to proclaim that young brown children from Central America are a disease ridden threat to national security. Have you read the Constitution lately? Ever? Clearly you are in need of a brief refresher. The Bill of Rights states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." Damn INCONVENIENT for you, I suppose, but supposedly we are a nation of laws, not men, and you can't expect to get away with enforcing the law one way for the people you agree with and another way for those you don't.

Dear Mr. Boren, We are grateful for the First Amendment to the Consitution, which permits citizens peacefully to express their opinions. I have participated in the marches in opposition to the School of the Americas in the past and endorse their aim to shut it down. I have nearly 30 years of experience with medical projects in Central America and am well aware of what the graduates of this infamous "school" did in El Salvador and elsewhere with their training at SOA. Please reconsider your refusal to give full permission for a peaceful demonstration as in the past. Your agreement or lack of agreement with the positions taken are, you see, irrelevant. Dear Police Chief Boren, We are concerned about the denial of the constitutional rights of people to continue demonstrating on the street outside the main gates of Fort Benning. We are calling on the Columbus police department to reverse its decision and to uphold the constitutional rights to free speech and freedom of assembly. Since the demonstrations began there 25 years ago, thousands of people have gathered annually at the gate to honor the memories of the victims and to work to make our world a more peaceful and just place for all. The entrance, the gate, and the location of our annual funeral procession is sacred ground to us. We have responsibilities and freedoms under our constitution to peacefully assemble and to speak truth to power. We are committed to these principles and are disturbed by the suggestion that our right to peaceably assemble and protest injustices of our government at the same location we have been doing so for 25 years can be seemingly arbitrarily taken away by the government.

The Columbus police department is as guilty as the SOA in denying the Constitutional rights of citizens of the U.S. and nations of the western hemisphere. Any government, or branch thereof, that attempts to abrogate constitutionally-determined rights granted under the law, is as guilty of overthrowing the Constitution of the United States of America as anyone who commits treason against our government and its people. Why are these peaceful, law abiding citizens being silenced? Is this part of an extended effort to cover up the crimes of the SOA? The US Government does some amazing wonderful things, but the action in Latin America is a human rights injustice. These people deserve to tell their stories, not just outside, but their leaders should be allowed to sit down with leaders of the decision makers at SOA. The organizations should be working together to right the crimes and bring justice. Integrity needs to enter in here, not ran away from or silenced.

I totally support School of the Americas Watch and their work over the past 25 years, and their 1st amendment right to free speech and to protest the military training of dictatorships and repressive regimes in Latin America.
