Eric J. Garcia created the Hypocrisy cartoon from Page 2 in the Fall 2008 issue of Presente.

ImageEric was born October 21, 1977 in Albuquerque, New Mexico and from the earliest age has been drawing.  A versatile Chicano artist, his media range from historical oil paintings to lithograph posters.

Eric started creating political cartoons while in the Air Force.  At first it was to poke fun at buddies of his, but later evolved into satirizing his job and the military itself.  “When I went to college I began to understand the power of these cartoons,” Eric says, realization strengthened as his interest grew for politics.  He earned his bachelors in Fine Arts with a minor in Chicano studies at the University of New Mexico, and it was historical and contemporary issues that galvanized his art.  During his time at the University Eric was hired as the political cartoonist for the student newspaper, the Daily Lobo, and in 2005, he was awarded the New Mexico Associated Press “Best Graphic Illustrator for a College Newspaper.”  Eric has recently been hired on at Albuquerque’s weekly entertainment magazine the Alibi, where his newest political cartoon called “El Machete Illustrated” can be seen.

One of the few Chicano political cartoonists, Eric Garcia has a unique perspective, that offers new ways of visually and intellectually examining world affairs.  This Chicano perspective offers a critical vision of often misguided U.S. perceptions and beliefs  “I have recently been invited to send political cartoons to Mexico and as far off as Bolivia for use in grass roots political campaigns.” Garcia says, “Through my work I hope to reach as broad an audience as possible  Even if viewers do not agree with my message, if I can only spark the dialogue and begin the debate on these important issues, I would have to say that the cartoon was a success.”
