On June 28, 2009, the elected president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, was forced out of his home by the SOA graduate-led military and flown into exile in Costa Rica. The military and coup government have since led a brutal campaign to repress the resistance to the coup through murder, illegal detention of thousands, intimidation, and the closing of media outlets.
Since 1990, people have gathered each November at the gates of Ft. Benning - home of the SOA - on the anniversary of the 1989 massacre of 14-year-old Celina Ramos, her mother Elba and six Jesuit priests in El Salvador. Nineteen of the 26 Salvadoran army officers responsible for this atrocity were trained at the SOA. In November, we commemorate all those who have died at the hands of SOA-trained soldiers -- as well as to celebrate the resistance and to take action to end this training and the racism, repression and failed policy it represents.

Listen to powerful testimony, speeches and interviews about the School of the Americas and the violence connected with the school.
When Pete Seeger sang at the protest several years ago he called the movement to close down the SOA “the singingest movement since the Civil Rights movement.” This is surely the case (at least when we’re talking about the US). About every other person getting on the stage is a musician, or a group of musicians, singing new and old songs about making a better world.
