Join the Translation and Interpretation Working Group

i hope this finds you all well and may you be enjoying the beauty of life despite the heat and other stressors!

it's time again to begin planning and thinking about translation and interpretation for this year's vigil in georgia. the dates are november 19 - 21 and we are again enthused and excited to provide interpretation and translation services in order to make the vigil accessible. we want to check in with folks to see if there is the possibility of and interest in going. we have a great coordinating team and we invite you to join us to whatever degree and capacity you are able. please check out your calendars and the info below and let me know about possibilities at your earliest convenience.

i'll be as brief but clear as i can about our plans and needs. we intend to provide:

electronic (that is, can be done via internet) doc translation in the coming few months;
rapid-response doc translation just before, during and after the vigil events.

on-site: simultaneous and consecutive interping (span <-> eng) during workshops at the convention center on friday and saturday;
consecutive interping (span -> eng) for speakers from the stage sat and sun (as well as doing periodic anuncios in spanish); and
simul (eng -> span) for the radio broadcast of the events at the gate on sat and sun.

additionally, we could use help doing set up work the thurs before, saturday morning at the gate, sunday afternoon post-vigil, and even possibly mon am. i know that few folks have the ability to stay that long but wanted to put that out there just in case you have an urge to luxuriate in an extended trip! : )

if you prefer a lower-key activity, we welcome folks who can help staff the green tent, handing out the radio receivers to spanish-speaking vigil participants sat and sun.

there is also the possibility we might need folks to do accompaniment interping-- accompanying a spanish-only speaker to facilitate communication in the crowd or in supporting them to accomplish needed tasks like getting meals.

and finally, we can always use help to do spanish language media work in preparation for and during the vigil. some of the doc trans will be for that but we would be glad of more folks to do other media-related work. if you have interest in and experience with this particular aspect, or if you have media contacts you could share with us, please let me know that too.

Translation/ Interpretation working group looking for two days of volunteer radio tech support for the vigil

We were the first major outdoor event in the US to microbroadcast simultaneous Spanish interpretation of the entire event. We are proud to be a bilingual event, but last year we had trouble getting the broadcast out. We think we have all necessary equipment, but we need someone with technical experience who can troubleshoot as problems arise (where to hang antenna, being heard over helicopters, army music and our own event speakers, etc.) and monitor the broadcast once we’re up and running. Other unusual challenges we could describe in more detail if you might be able help us out. We would very much appreciate if someone could be available from Friday Nov 20 for set up and if possible stay until sometime Sunday Nov 22.
